Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons

Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons or EPIRBS are important to #BoatingSafety. EPIRBs are designed to transmit a radio signal when activated. The signal is picked up by a SAR satellite and sent to a ground receiving station and on to a control center. The source is identified through registration. Coast Guard reminds boaters not to use flares as fireworks

The Coast Guard reminds boaters not to use flares as fireworks during this year’s Fourth of July celebrations, and to report accidental flare discharges. Flares should only be fired to indicate distress in an emergency situation. Flares can be life-saving equipment and should be used if there is distress and assistance is needed.
